Lions Top Mozambique

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute’s Cameroonian National Team is on its way to the quarterfinals at FIBA Africa.

Cameroon used a big second quarter to set the tone and closed the deal with a big fourth to defeat Mozambique 75-42 on Monday in the first round of tournament play at AfroBasket. Luc tallied 11 points, including a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line and grabbed seven boards to go along with three assists and a steal in the Lions victory.

Cameroon (3-1) advances to the quarterfinals, where they will play Ivory Coast (4-0) on Wednesday for a spot in the semifinals. That game begins at 10:30 a.m. PT.

Undefeated No More

Cameroon’s quest to go undefeated in pool play at FIBA Africa came up just short.

Despite a tournament-high 18 points from Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, the Cameroonians fell for the first time at AfroBasket, 91-84 to Nigeria on Sunday.

In what was by far the most closely contested game of the competition so far for Cameroon, Nigeria built a first quarter lead just to have it dissolve in the second quarter. Luc put the Lions ahead at the half with a bucket late in the second quarter which made it 40-39 at the break.

Cameroon carried that momentum into the third and built a lead as high as nine points, but Nigeria closed the quarter strong and the difference was just three at the end of the third, setting up an exciting finish. The lead changed hands several times over the final frame and with less than two minutes to go the Lions led 82-81. New Orleans Pelicans forward Al-Farouq Aminu hit a three to give Nigeria the lead, but Luc answered with a deuce to tie it at 84.

Unfortunately those were the last points Cameroon would score as Nigeria made two key buckets down the stretch, got the stops they needed against the Lions offense and closed out the game at the free throw line.

Cameroon finished pool play 2-1 to take second in Group D behind Nigeria. Both advance to tournament play, which begins Monday.

Luc, who also tallied a pair of assists and three rebounds to go with his 18 points finished pool play with averages of 13 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Cameroon (2-1) will take on Mozambique (1-2) on Monday in the first round of pool play.

Luc Dominates Mali

After a quiet start to the FIBA Africa tournament, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute broke out on Friday to lead the Cameroon National Team to their second win.

Luc scored a game-high 16 points, matched his rebound total from game one with seven and dished out two assists. But he set the tone on the defensive end with four of Cameroon’s 21 steals as they forced Mali into a whopping 33 turnovers on the way to an easy 89-35 victory.

The game was a clear mismatch from the outset as Cameroon;s defense suffocated Mali and built a 29-6 lead after one quarter. They led 49-12 at the break and 78-17 after three quarters before letting off the gas and giving Luc and his fellow starters the entire fourth quarter off.

Pool play at AfroBasket wraps up on Sunday when Cameroon (2-0) takes on Nigeria (2-0) in a de-facto Group D championship match. The winner of the match will go into the 16-team tournament, which begins Monday, with the higher seed.

Cameroon Opens Strong

The Cameroon National Team is off to a hot start at FIBA Africa.

Cameroon carried the momentum of a dominant first quarter through the rest of the game in a wire-to-wire 74-43 defeat of Congo-Brazaville on Wednesday.

Luc played 26 minutes in the opener for the Lions and tallied just five points, but did grab seven rebounds, including three off the offensive glass. He also had three assists and a steal in the victory.

Cameroon moves on to the second game of Group D Pool Play on Friday against Mali.
